Cross country makes strides at McNeese State meet

LAKE CHARLES -- The Northwestern State men's cross country team ran well as a pack Saturday, but now the Demons must close the gap to the lead pack in future races.The NSU men finished last in the five-team meet at the Asics Cowboy Stampede at McNeese State, but the five Demon scorers finished 13 runners apart from each other.Grant Butts led the way with a 19th-place finish in the 47-runner field, running the 4-mile race in 22:03."Grant Butts showed some guts out there today," said NSU coach Nathanial McReynolds. "We were solid all the way through."We ran well as a pack today, we just have to close the gap on that lead pack to improve our scores."Hunter Wamack finished 20th at 22:13, followed by Lucas Moncla (23rd, 22:42), Jeremy Elliott (27th, 23:02) and Anthony Renteria (31st, 23:34).Two Lady Demons participated Saturday, with Jacqueline Rushford finishing ninth and Erin Sitarz 22nd in the 55-runner race.Rushford completed the 5K race in 19:19 with Sitarz finishing in 20:59."Both girls were solid today and heading in the right direction for the conference championships," McReynolds said. "The conditioning is really coming through."Rushford has three top-10 finishes in four meets this season.
